growing south asian jihad START SMH.COM.AU "Cambodian and US investigators believe the violent anti-Thai riots which shook Phnom Penh earlier this year thwarted Hambali's plans for a new regional headquarters for JI operations. Cambodian officials continue to hunt at least nine other JI activists thought to be in the country. Two Thais, an Egyptian and a Cambodian arrested in late May in Phnom Penh are now thought to have been working with Hambali to build a new JI cell in the country. A local Islamic school is accused of being a front for substantial money transfers to fund JI operations. " END SMH.COM.AU my friend just married a thai muslim, and he gave a description of thai islam that is very liberal. we will have to recruit him as a south asian correspondant. it would be interesting to see how islam in thailand (and the rest of south asia) has changed (or hasn't) since he moved there in the late 90's. james? any comment? via cursor thieves in high places: jim hightower : START JIM HIGHTOWER "Yet our strength is not inside the Beltway but out here, where people are doing great things and wondering why the Democratic Party isn't with them. Reverse that ratio and start focusing on building a grassroots organization that communicates, organizes and mobilizes across America, block by block." END JIM HIGHTOWER this is one of things that i beleive in most. while it matters what is happening at the head, it starts at the feet, and that's where it really matters. it is one thing i learned while working in the boys scouts (i was a "regional' chief and was quasi-leadership at a national high adventure camp, philmont), what ever hubris comes out of the national office, what a troop decides to do will make or break the BSA. i know, and have experience with troops that let homosexual advisors be a part of them. they have fun, they aren't worried about it. the boys and girls from that troop and post will go on to lead the boy scouts out of the hubris. relief workers leaving iraq START CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR "Relief professionals say that, in some respects, their situation today - being attacked by an unseen enemy, with unclear motives - is more dangerous than during wartime, when risks are often simpler to calculate." END CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR things are getting bad. we can't even protect the NGO's who are just trying to feed and generally care for the well fare of everyday people. Wednesday, August 27, 2003
how serious is north korea's nuclear threat? the christian science monitor breaks down the nuclear north korea. how can we tell others not to develop weapons, when we are actively developing new ones also? howard dean in middle america this guy gives a run down of the dean meetup in falls church, va. 6 african americans, with mostly crusty hippies. sounds about right. i do agree that the dean campaign needs to reach out to more middle americans, and to start sooner rather than later would be a good idea. i would be interested to see the ethnic make up of people at rallies in new york or even college park. i would be surprised if i saw 1 african american at the albuquerque rally last month, the crusty hippies were there en masse, though. there was a small contingent of latino's (mostly women, and this new mexico, for cry aye) man i can't eat nothin' anymore so, i have been had. i believed that there nice little sea bass, living off the coast of chile, happily propagating for my dinner. but, no. they are actually the patagonian toothfish (not as marketable as chilean sea bass, eh?), and fisherman are getting arrested for fishing them. tuna kills dolphins, the cod are gone, salmon stocks are depleteing. if this keeps up, i'll only be able to eat the tofu my wife makes. soy...the real magical fruit.
